Microbiology

The study of microorganisms, Microbiology, was predominantly based on culturing of organisms. Historically, growth of microorganisms in culture was used for identification of disease causing organisms. The incubate, inspect, identify and diagnose methodology is still a mainstay in hospital based microbial surveillance.

Besides identification of disease causing agents, bacteria such as E.coli, lactobacillus and yeast have become important as agents for cloning & sequencing, protein expression, probiotic augmentation and vehicles for bio-production of biological drug components.  Newer research in the realm of microbial interaction such as biofilms are adding tools in our arsenal to control bacterial contamination, understand quorum sensing and evolution of cell-cell interaction.
